Book Update: I Made Excuses to NOT Record My Audiobook

Read book update #18, first

I noticed a few times during the day that I made excuses in my mind to not starting recording my audiobook today.

Each time I heard an excuse I told myself, “Yes, I am. I can do this. I’ve totally got this.” I knew it was just my mind trying to keep me safe… And it’s my job to thinking different thoughts to head in the direction of what I do want.

You see, it’s one thing to do the deep healing work to heal from childhood sexual abuse…

And another to write about it…

And still, a whole other thing to read my book out loud for others to listen to…

But I knew I needed to record my memoir for an audiobook.

I wasn’t guided this far on my book journey to not record the book.

And frankly, I just can’t imagine hearing my deeply personal and vulnerable AF stories in someone else’s voice.

On my way to the recording studio, I listened to a heart-connecting meditation by Dr. Joe Dispenza, titled GOLOV-20. I was breathing in and out of my heart and tapping on the sides of my fingertips to help release any fear or anxiety and to get myself centered.

I didn’t feel a lot of fear inside, but even a little can be heard in my voice on the recording so I wanted to clear it all out to have the best possible recording for my listeners.

Purposefully wearing my red t-shirt for strength and courage…

I stood in the recording booth with headphones on and a microphone just a few inches from my mouth. I started reading “On the Other Side – a Spiritual Memoir by Julie Jacky. (Pause) To all those who have whispered Me too…”

Jamie, the audio engineer, was sitting in the next room at the mammoth control panel, listening to my every word.

When I got tongue-tied I stopped, sipped on water, took a deep breath in, and started up again.

When I wasn’t fully present because my mind wandered off thinking about the story I was reading, Jamie could hear it in my voice and would stop me, have me back up, and start again.

The takeaways I learned at my first recording session include:

+ sip water frequently

+ breathe (it’s easy to hold my breath without realizing it.)

+ stay fully present

+ when I am fully present, I get in the zone and the words light up on the page making it easy to read.

+ sip more water – my voice sounds better when I do.

It was a great experience recording the

  • Introduction
  • chapter one – the courage to be vulnerable
  • chapter two – whack-a-mole

And now I am no longer nervous and look forward to upcoming recording sessions. It’s exciting to think that in addition to my ebook and hardcover book, my audiobook will be available in August 2020!

Drop a note below and let me know which version of my memoir you’re most excited to read.
