Whether you’re brand spanking new to meditation or a seasoned meditator we all have the same challenges in meditation. Mind chatter.
Yep, it’s true. Even people who have been meditating for years suffer from all those random thoughts incessantly rambling and rumbling through the mind the moment we sit down with the intention to meditate.
Thank goodness I discovered a little trick to help quiet that mind chatter right up so I can make the most of my meditation.
My trick is easy to use and quite handy, literally. I use Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT), also known as Tapping, to help quiet my mind.
To use EFT, we simply tap with our fingertips on specific meridian points. The result is a quieter mind.
You see, our thoughts alone can create stress in our bodies. When we tap we reduce cortisol, the stress hormone, and then we shift into the prefrontal cortex part of our brain. There, when our mind quiets and our body relaxes, is the perfect condition for going deep into meditation.
Depending on how loud the volume of chatter is, determines which tapping method I use.
When my mind chatter volume is turned up high, then I use the main tapping points on my head, face, collarbone, and underarm to stop the jabber.
When my mind chatter is slight but still annoying, then I tap on the sides of my fingertips. This method allows me to focus on the meditation while simultaneously silencing my mind.
If you’re new to Emotional Freedom Technique here is a quick video to learn the meridian tapping points and to try an exercise so you can feel how it works.
So next time you sit down to meditate and your mind starts chatting away, Tap. You’ll be amazed at how well it works and glad you did!
